Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Calls for Unity to Safeguard Ethiopia’s Sovereignty


ADDIS ABABA – Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh called on Ethiopians to work together to ensure the country’s sovereignty in all areas, during a panel discussion and exhibition at the Addis Ababa Science Museum on Sovereignty Day. The event, held on Pagume 3 (September 8, 2024), highlighted the significance of Ethiopia’s sovereignty under the theme “Harmony in Ensuring All-Round Sovereignty.”



According to Ethiopian News Agency, national sovereignty is non-negotiable for Ethiopians, and it must be preserved through hard work and sacrifices. He stressed the importance of achieving economic, technological, and budgetary independence to strengthen the country’s sovereignty. Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Taye Atskeselassie echoed these sentiments, referencing Ethiopia’s centuries-old independence and citing the Battle of Adwa as a key symbol of the nation’s sovereignty.



Other officials, including National Disaster Risk Management Commission Commissioner Ambassador Shiferaw Teklemariam and Lieutenant General Alemshet Degife, emphasized the need for food sovereignty and the protection of the country’s territorial integrity. National Intelligence and Security Service Director General Ambassador Redwan Hussein underscored the importance of ensuring Ethiopia’s economic sovereignty to reduce dependency on foreign aid.
