DÉDOUGOU — The Muslim community in Dédougou marked the festival of Aïr El Kébir, also known as Tabaski, on Sunday, June 16, 2024, with prayers focused on the protection of military forces, the return of peace, and favorable weather for agriculture. The religious event, attended by regional authorities and representatives of other faiths, served as a platform for unity and communal prayer in the town.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the ceremony was not just a religious observance but also a plea for divine intervention in various societal and environmental issues facing Burkina Faso. Imam Mamadou Ba led the congregation in prayers emphasizing the need for strengthened faith, unity, forgiveness, sharing, and solidarity among all Burkinabè. These values, he noted, are crucial for fostering peace and cohesion within the community. Additionally, special prayers were offered for the health of the Grand Imam, who is currently receiving medical treatment outside the region.

The service also included a recount of the story of Prophet Abraham’s obedience to God, which is the central theme of the Tabaski festival. Imam Ba performed the ritual sacrifice of a ram, demonstrating the act of obedience and sacrifice that is encouraged among all capable Muslims. The regional authorities and interfaith representatives shared their hopes for lasting peace, societal cohesion, and a successful agricultural season, emphasizing the festival’s broader significance in promoting communal harmony and resilience.
