Mexico city: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the death toll from a train derailment in the southeastern state of Oaxaca has risen to 14. The incident occurred on December 28, 2025, and has claimed the life of a 73-year-old woman who succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the train was carrying around 250 passengers when it derailed and plunged into a ravine approximately 7 meters deep near the exit of Nizanda, as it was traveling toward the municipality of Matias Romero. The president expressed concern over the challenges involved in recovering the train, noting that the placement of a crane is proving to be difficult.
President Sheinbaum also mentioned that the attorney general’s office will lead the investigation to determine the causes of the accident. The federal government is engaged in discussions about the best course of action to recover the train and address the aftermath of this tragic event.
