Cyclone Boris Ravages Galati County: 5 Fatalities and Widespread Displacement Reported


Galati County, Romania—Cyclone Boris struck Galati County with devastating force on Saturday, resulting in five deaths and the displacement of over 250 residents. The cyclone delivered unprecedented rainfall of 150 liters per square meter, causing extensive flooding that disrupted power to more than 25,000 homes and affected over 5,000 households in 12 towns.



According to Namibia Press Agency, the Romanian government has launched a full-scale emergency response. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu visited Slobozia Conachi, one of the areas most affected by the flooding. During his visit, Ciolacu emphasized the government’s focus on life-saving measures and the rapid deployment of emergency resources. He assured the public that temporary housing, food, and essential supplies would be provided to those displaced by the disaster.



In an urgent response, the National Committee for Emergency Situations has approved the provision of 400 tons of food, as well as sleeping bags, mattresses, and modular housing units for temporary shelter. The Ministry of National Defense has deployed military personnel, rescue boats, and trucks to assist in the ongoing rescue operations.



Furthermore, to maintain law and order in the chaos, the Romanian Gendarmerie has increased patrols in the affected areas to prevent looting and vandalism. A spokesperson for the Gendarmerie reiterated the commitment to public safety and urged residents to heed safety instructions and avoid returning to flood-hit areas until they are deemed safe.



With a red alert for heavy rain issued for the neighboring Vaslui County, the government remains vigilant. Continuous efforts are being made to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore normal conditions for the thousands impacted by what is considered the most severe flooding in the region since 2016.
