Customs Seize Over a Thousand Tonnes of Spoiled Rice in Burkina Faso

Dakola – Dakola customs presented to the press on Thursday 1,040 tonnes of spoiled rice seized by agents at this border post with Ghana in May 2024.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the seized rice, originating from Pakistan, was loaded on 20 trailer trucks, each carrying 52 tonnes. The merchandise is estimated to be worth 322 million 233 thousand 840 FCFA. Ilboudo indicated that the destruction of the seized goods will be the responsibility of the trader involved, who will be prosecuted for multiple offenses specified by the prosecutor.

Customs agents, after stopping the trucks, doubted the quality of the rice due to the condition of the packaging. Samples were taken by the national health security agency, which confirmed that the rice is unfit for consumption. Hermann Dambre, the complaints and claims manager of the Consumers League of Burkina, congratulated the customs agents for the seizure and urged them to intensify their efforts to prevent unfit products from entering the market. Dambre criticized traders who endanger public health by selling such products and called on the justice system to take action against them to deter illegal practices.
