Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister Applauds Ethiopia’s Entry into BRICS, Foresees Significant Contributions

HAVANA — Elio E. Rodriguez Perdomo, Cuba’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, has expressed strong confidence in Ethiopia’s ability to enhance the collaborative efforts of BRICS nations following its recent inclusion in the group. In an interview with the Ethiopian News Agency, Perdomo highlighted Ethiopia’s growing role on both regional and international stages.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ethiopia’s new membership in BRICS is viewed positively by Cuba, which maintains excellent relations with all members of the group, including its newest members. Perdomo emphasized that Ethiopia is poised to make significant contributions to BRICS, benefiting from and adding to the group’s collective efforts, especially in addressing the shared challenges and interests of the Global South.

Perdomo also noted the strategic importance of Ethiopia’s membership for Cuba, stating, “For us, it’s excellent to have a new friend within this group, which is Ethiopia.” He stressed the ongoing coordination between Cuba and BRICS countries in multilateral relationships and foreign policy, which is expected to be further strengthened by Ethiopia’s involvement.

During the recent BRICS summit in South Africa, a meeting between Cuban President and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed underscored the two nations’ commitment to deepening bilateral relations and supporting Ethiopia’s contributions within BRICS. This partnership is set to enhance Cuba’s engagement with Ethiopia and reflects the evolving dynamics of global diplomacy and South-South cooperation.
