Homa bay: Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan has issued a strong warning against illegal fishing practices in Lake Victoria, specifically targeting officials of the Beach Management Units (BMU) for their alleged involvement in bribery and unlawful activities.
According to Kenya News Agency, Lilan accused some BMU officials of taking bribes from local fishermen, allowing them to use prohibited fishing gear in the lake. He emphasized the need for stringent measures to combat these corrupt practices, stating, “We will deal with those officials who have started the business that permits illegal activities in the lake for money.”
Lilan also highlighted the issue of smuggling, pointing out that some fishermen illegally import nets worth millions of shillings from neighboring Tanzania, often leading to violent confrontations. “These fishermen engage in illegal activities like smuggling of nets and when a fight breaks out then they claim harassment in the lake. I am warning you that we will put a stop to all
these,” he declared.
The County Commissioner also urged the BMU officials to collaborate with the Nyumba Kumi Initiative, a community policing effort, to ensure a safe and conducive environment for lawful fishing activities. This partnership aims to bolster the local economy by providing a secure environment for fishermen.
During the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Wakiaga Polytechnic, Lilan also addressed other community issues, including the problematic gambling activities in the area. He linked the prevalence of gambling, particularly the aviator betting strategy, to increased suicide rates and issued an ultimatum to local chiefs to eradicate these activities or face consequences.
As the long school holidays approach, Lilan called on parents and churches to take proactive steps in safeguarding the youth from potential dangers. He stressed the importance of community responsibility in protecting children during these vulnerable times.
The County Commissioner’s statements reflect a broader crackdown on corr
uption and illegal activities in Homa Bay, signaling a tough stance on law enforcement and community safety moving forward.
