CPLP Ministers Convene in New York to Agree on Diplomatic Positions

New york: The Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) held an informal meeting in New York to agree on diplomatic positions and address strategic issues related to the Portuguese-speaking world. The meeting was part of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Angola was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, at the meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs. In 2024, the rotating presidency of the CPLP, previously held by So Tomé and Príncipe, proposed an upgrade to the format of this meeting by suggesting an informal summit of Heads of State and Government of the organization’s member countries during the week of the UN high-level debate.

Several topics were identified as potential agenda items or motivations for the meeting, including a review of the presidency’s year, an analysis of recent political and diplomatic developments in member states, and the alignment of positions in multilateral forums. Cultural and linguisti
c issues were also discussed, focusing on the value of Portuguese and its global relevance, with considerations about making Portuguese an official language of the UN.
