BAKU: The Climate Observatory of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) was officially presented in Baku, Azerbaijan, during COP29, which runs until November 22. This new platform collects and disseminates climate information from its member countries, including Angola, and offers online access to this data.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Cecília Silva Bernardo, the national director of Climate Action and Sustainable Development, emphasized the observatory’s importance for shaping public policies, projects, and programs focused on climate and sustainable development. She mentioned that Angola is developing a dedicated platform for adaptation and development while the CPLP platform addresses mitigation aspects.

In its early stages, the project involves Angola contributing data primarily on agriculture, forestry, and demography. Future updates will include information from the oil and energy sector. The platform also features data on deforested and reforested areas, dense forests, and r
ivers, which will be updated with the new census.

Regarding greenhouse gas emissions, Cecília Silva noted that African countries, including Angola, account for approximately 3.5% of global emissions. Since 2014, Angola has secured over US$100 million for climate projects, mostly through donations, ensuring effective use of resources for benefiting communities and sectors.

Angola’s participation in COP29 was seen as satisfactory, with notable progress achieved in meetings, booth activities, and establishing partnerships for future investments. The Angolan government acknowledges the country’s vulnerability to climate change and its impacts, such as floods, droughts, soil erosion, and rising sea levels, which are expected to intensify.
