County Government of Kakamega Urged to Support Business Initiatives for Persons with Disabilities

Kakamega: The Kakamega County Disability Caucus has called on the County Government to offer financial support to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to help them initiate and sustain income-generating activities.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Caucus's Secretary General, Catherine Shiundu, has also requested the county government to waive certain rates for persons with disabilities and to curb harassment from County Enforcement Officers, which has deterred PWDs from engaging in business activities like hawking. Shiundu made these remarks during the Kakamega County Disability Caucus Annual General Meeting held at Daisy Special School.

Lucy Mulombi, the Chairperson of the Caucus, emphasized the importance of inclusion, stating that the organization will continue advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities. She affirmed the Caucus's commitment to collaborating with both County and National governments, as well as other partners, to ensure that PWDs can realize their aspirations.

Gaudencia Otipa, the Kakamega County Director of Social Services and Culture, highlighted the positive impact of the county's partnership with the Caucus. She noted that the county had empowered 120 PWDs self-help groups by providing each with Sh50,000 to boost their businesses in the last financial year. She also mentioned the inclusion of PWDs in the Shelter Improvement programme, which constructs decent houses for selected beneficiaries, along with providing blankets and mattresses at no cost.

Danson Moseti from the United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK) reiterated the organization's commitment to supporting grassroots organizations that champion the rights and wellbeing of PWDs.
