COTU Secretary General Urges Unity among Sub-Saharan Trade Unionists for Workers’ Rights

Shanzu:In an appeal to strengthen activism for the welfare and rights of workers across the Sub-Saharan region, Mr. Francis Atwoli, Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions of Kenya (COTU), addressed Trade Unionists at a crucial regional meeting. His remarks came during the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Executive Committee Meeting of the IndustriALL Global Union (IGU) convened at Pride Inn Paradise in Shanzu.

According to the Kenya News Agency, Atwoli emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity among trade unionists. He highlighted the significance of such collaboration, especially considering the challenges workers in the region currently confront. IGU, a federation representing over 50 million workers spanning 140 countries, operates in sectors like mining, energy, and manufacturing on a global scale. The federation’s primary objectives encompass the strengthening of unions, ensuring safe workplaces, confronting global capital, and advancing democracy, inclusiveness, social justice, and globalization, among others.

Atwoli illuminated the hurdles faced by the Sub-Saharan region, which include challenges presented by platform work, the evolving digital economy, precarious employment situations, lack of robust social protection, and the mounting cost of living crisis. However, he assured the gathering that a primary focus of the meeting was to address and find solutions to the soaring cost of living.

The COTU Secretary General asserted, “Our presence here underscores the enduring importance of organised labour in our Modern World, and as Union Leaders, we are entrusted with the solemn duty to advocate for the rights and welfare of the working people in our respective countries.”

During his speech, Atwoli acknowledged the efforts of the IGU Vice President, Ms. Rose Omamo, who has consistently demonstrated commitment to serving Kenyan workers, progressing through the echelons of the labour movement in Kenya. Atwoli pressed upon the need for international collaboration among trade union leaders, believing such a unified front could further empower national centres.

Reiterating the essence of the gathering, Atwoli emphasized the importance of enhancing collaboration, fostering knowledge sharing, and fortifying partnerships. To effectively address and strategize for the challenges ahead, such bonds of solidarity are indispensable.

In conclusion, Atwoli made an earnest plea to President William Ruto, urging the organization of a high-level conference involving key ministries and advisors. The aim would be to delve into potential resolutions for the pressing cost of living crisis. “We have asked them in writing that we need a serious meeting with the Head of State, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Labour, and COTU Executive Board to discuss this matter in depth and see whether we are moving in the right direction,” Atwoli stated.
