Kajiado: The State Department for Correctional Services is embarking on correction, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates across the country.
According to Kenya News Agency, Correctional Services Principal Secretary, Dr. Salome Beacco, stated that the department is experiencing a paradigm shift from a system that focuses solely on punishment to one that emphasizes correction, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates back into the community.
Speaking during a visit at the Kajiado G.K Prisons, Dr. Beacco praised the staff working at correctional facilities nationwide for their commitment and professionalism. She urged them to continue being innovative, dedicated, and proactive for the initiative to succeed. Dr. Beacco emphasized the multifaceted role of correctional officers as mentors, counselors, educators, security enforcers, and often the first hope for inmates post-conviction.
Dr. Beacco highlighted the importance of building a culture that respects human rights, upholds the dignity of staff and inmates, and focuses on mutual accountability. She noted that every skill imparted, conflict de-escalated, and guidance offered to an inmate could significantly impact their potential for reoffending or reintegration.
She identified staff shortages, infrastructure limitations, and managing inmates with diverse needs as challenges faced by correctional facilities. Dr. Beacco assured that the government is addressing these challenges by implementing reforms to ease the burden, including strengthening staffing levels, upgrading facilities, and investing in technology and training.
Additionally, Dr. Beacco advised officers to register with the Social Health Authority to manage medical expenses effectively. She encouraged them to improve their lives by taking online courses and avoiding vices such as gambling and drug abuse.
