Cooperative Societies in Kenya Encouraged to Lead Monthly Tree Planting Initiatives

Murang’a, Kenya – Simon Chelugui, the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and SMEs Development, has urged cooperative societies across Kenya to take a leading role in tree planting exercises. Speaking in Murang’a, Chelugui emphasized the need for cooperatives to contribute actively to national tree cover and environmental conservation. He announced that his ministry would spearhead tree planting in counties, with all departments and agencies under the ministry required to establish a monthly tree planting schedule.

According to Kenya News Agency, the ministry is considering making tree planting a condition for the annual renewal of Saccos’ licenses. He urged cooperatives to collaborate with schools, the Kenya Forest Service, and other organizations for tree planting sites. The Cabinet Secretary also called on the Murang’a County Government and the Kenya Forest Service to support this initiative, highlighting the importance of continuous tree planting efforts.

During the event in Murang’a, over 10,000 seedlings were planted, contributing to the county’s current 27.8 percent tree cover. Chelugui also stressed the importance of involving various stakeholders, including churches, businesses, factories, and multinational companies, in county tree planting committees. He encouraged these entities to plant trees on their lands, particularly fruit trees like avocado and macadamia, which offer multiple benefits.

Chelugui also highlighted the need to educate and engage young people in tree-related activities. Murang’a Deputy Governor Stephen Munania indicated the county government’s commitment to partner with the national government on environmental conservation. He mentioned the formation of cooperatives for fruit tree farmers in the county as part of a value chain approach.

Nominated Senator Veronica Maina called for full government funding for tree planting exercises in counties to ensure the nurturing of planted seedlings. Managing Director of Murang’a Water and Sewerage Company (Muwasco) Eng. Daniel Ng’ang’a confirmed that the 10,000 seedlings planted at the company’s sewage area would be well maintained. He underscored the role of trees in ensuring consistent water supply and mentioned Muwasco’s ongoing efforts to plant trees in water catchment areas.
