Consultant Urges Burkina Faso to Implement National Policy for Local Consumption

Ouagadougou: Through the 6th issue of his magazine on endogenous economics, "Becoming African," consultant-trainer Kelgwende Andre Sawadogo emphasized the necessity of adopting a comprehensive national policy on local consumption to bolster the economy and promote endogenous products. Sawadogo argued that without such a policy, the 'buy local' initiative would remain a superficial concept without a solid structural foundation.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Sawadogo highlighted the inadequacy of current administrative arrangements for endogenous products, which hinders their competitiveness in the market. He pointed out that despite the revolutionary enthusiasm for local consumption, a substantial national policy is lacking, which is crucial for driving the country's endogenous development.

Sawadogo referenced an instance cited by the President of Faso, where women producing high-quality soap faced challenges in fulfilling orders due to a lack of formal structuring. He further connected local consumption with youth employability, emphasizing its integration into national employment policy to foster vocational training and local economic growth.

The consultant acknowledged government efforts, particularly in integrating local consumption into public procurement. He praised the decision by Burkinabe authorities to halt furniture imports, which previously cost the country between 36 and 50 billion FCFA annually.
