Windhoek: Construction of the Kamanjab Basic Sports Facility officially commenced on Tuesday following the handover of the project site, with leaders describing the development as a significant investment in youth empowerment and community development.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the official site handover ceremony was attended by representatives of the Office of the Kunene Governor, the Kamanjab Constituency office, Kamanjab Village Council, community members, and other stakeholders. Speaking at the ceremony, Kamanjab Constituency councillor Nikodemus Amutenya said the project marks the realisation of a long-held aspiration for the constituency and will create opportunities for young people to develop their sporting talent.

"Today marks the beginning of a dream becoming reality. It is the first step towards building a brighter future for our young people and our community," he said. Amutenya noted that despite the lack of adequate sports infrastructure, the constituency has produced talented footballers, netball players, athletes, and competitors in other sporting codes.

"For many years our youth have shown incredible talent in football, netball, athletics, and many other sports codes. However, they often lacked proper facilities to train, compete, and develop their talent. Today we are saying those days are coming to an end," he added. Amutenya emphasized that the facility represents hope and opportunity, noting that sport instills discipline, teamwork, respect, and leadership while helping to steer young people away from crime, alcohol, and drug abuse.

Kamanjab Village Council chairperson Samora Katjau described the project as an investment in the future of the area's youth and thanked President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for prioritizing sports infrastructure in remote communities. "This project represents hope, opportunities, and investment in the future of our youth. We appreciate the president for recognizing the needs of young people in remote communities such as Kamanjab," he said.

The facility is expected to provide a modern and safe venue for sporting activities, youth development programs, and community events, contributing to the social and economic development of Kamanjab. Construction is expected to be completed by July 2027.
