Conference in Gaoua Explores Lobi and Birifor Surnames to Preserve Cultural Identity


GAOUA — The Poni Development Forum organized a national conference on August 16 and 17, 2024, in Gaoua, aimed at identifying and understanding the surnames of the Lobi and Birifor communities under the theme “Knowing and Understanding Lobi and Birifor Surnames: An Imperative to Promote Cultures in Lobi Country.”



According to Burkina Information Agency, the conference brought together participants from areas inhabited by Lobi and Birifor people, including representatives from neighboring Ivory Coast. The event featured six presentations focusing on the origins, meanings, and significance of these surnames, with the goal of creating a comprehensive directory for the Ministry of Communication, Culture, Arts, and Tourism.



Daniel Da Hien, president of the organizing committee, emphasized the importance of this initiative in bringing the Lobi and Birifor communities together and preserving their cultural heritage. He noted that the surnames are crucial for maintaining the identity and traditions of these communities.



At the conclusion of the conference, a consensus document will be drafted and presented to the governor of the South-West region for review and potential amendments. Participants expressed satisfaction with the conference’s outcomes, highlighting the richness of the discussions and the potential impact of the project.
