Conclusion of University Hospital Expected for First Half of 2027

Luanda: The construction of the Luanda University Hospital is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027, the minister of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Albano Vicente Lopes Ferreira, announced Friday. The forecast was given to the press after a visit to the site by the President of the Republic, Joo Louren§o, to inspect the future hospital unit, located in the Camama-Sapu area, in Luanda.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister stated that the project is currently about 30 percent physically complete and is showing positive progress compared to the last technical assessment carried out on site, despite a slight delay from the initial schedule. Albano Ferreira assured that efforts are underway to accelerate the work and ensure the completion of the project within the new established deadline.

Designed as a tertiary-level, highly complex teaching hospital, the Luanda University Hospital will have the capacity to provide specialized medical care and support the practical training of students and professionals in the health field. The unit will have internal medicine services, surgical specialties, advanced imaging, operating rooms, intensive care, and modern diagnostic and treatment technologies, including robotic surgery and state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging equipment.

The minister also announced that the current Faculty of Medicine of Agostinho Neto University will be transferred to the new university complex, where projects related to the construction of academic and scientific infrastructure are simultaneously underway. In addition to its academic function, the hospital will be integrated into the National Health System and will provide care to patients referred for tertiary-level care.

With an area of approximately 40,000 square meters, of which 18,100 correspond to the built area, the unit will have capacity for 144 inpatient beds, including 12 intensive care beds and 20 isolation beds. Construction began in November 2024 and is being carried out by the Swiss company Mitrelli Group, with an estimated investment of 99 million US dollars.

Linked to the Faculty of Medicine of Agostinho Neto University, the Luanda University Hospital will also function as a biomedical research center, a medical residency platform, and a space for postgraduate training, contributing to strengthening the national capacity for training health professionals.
