NANYUKI: Kenyans are being urged to support the reintegration of ex-convicts into society, as many face challenges in resettling after serving their prison sentences. The call comes amid the commemoration of correctional service week, highlighting the potential for reformed individuals to contribute positively to their communities.

According to Kenya News Agency, Laikipia County Probation Coordinator Francis Kamau emphasized the importance of community acceptance of former inmates during an event in Nanyuki Town. Speaking on Tuesday, Kamau noted that many inmates acquire valuable skills such as tailoring, masonry, and hairdressing while incarcerated, equipping them to become self-reliant upon release. “They are released after they have fully reformed, and we call upon their families and the community to accept them back. Don’t see them as lawbreakers,” Kamau stated.

Superintendent of Prisons at the Nanyuki GK Prison, Danson Atama, highlighted the role of religious teachings and technical training in the ref
orm process for inmates. The correctional service week, celebrated under the theme ‘Mental Health Awareness,’ aims to raise awareness about the rehabilitation of offenders and is observed annually on October 22.

Atama also pointed out that mental health education is integral to preparing inmates for successful reintegration into the workforce. “We try to make sure our inmates are taught mental health aimed at effective service delivery at their respective places of work,” Atama said, adding that sports activities are used to enhance inmates’ mental wellness.

In conjunction with these efforts, probation officers are receiving training to manage stress and emotional challenges in their work, ensuring effective service delivery and support for ex-convicts rejoining society.
