Community Efforts Lead to Arrest in MTC’s Network Site Vandalism

Okomumbonde: Residents of Okomumbonde in the Otjinene Constituency have been praised by Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) after their efforts led to the arrest of a suspect linked to the vandalism of a network site in the area.

According to Namibia Press Agency, in a media statement issued by MTC on Thursday, community members discovered that an MTC network site had been vandalised and equipment stolen, allegedly for sale as scrap metal. MTC reported that five residents organised a search party and tracked the suspects' footprints for nearly 28 kilometers before locating their hideout. The group then alerted the Namibian Police, who responded and arrested a suspect.

MTC Chief Brand, Marketing, Communications and Sustainability Officer, Tim Ekandjo, stated that theft, vandalism, and tampering with telecommunications infrastructure result in costly damages and service disruptions that affect entire communities. "While this infrastructure belongs to MTC, it ultimately exists to serve the public by keeping communities connected," he said.

Ekandjo commended the residents of Okomumbonde for their vigilance and described their actions as a strong example of community policing. He also acknowledged the role of community-based crime prevention organisations, community policing forums, and security companies in protecting telecommunications infrastructure. "MTC is calling on all communities to help safeguard network infrastructure, which is critical to communication, emergency response, business continuity, and daily life," he said.
