Nandi county: Commissioner Caroline Nzwili has issued a stern warning against individuals causing deliberate fires in sugarcane plantations in Tinderet and Aldai Sub-Counties, labeling such acts as economic sabotage. During the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Senetwo, Tinderet Sub-County, Nzwili announced that authorities would not tolerate these unlawful activities and would charge perpetrators accordingly.
According to Kenya News Agency, Nzwili disclosed that there have been arrests linked to these arson incidents, and the police will continue their efforts to apprehend more individuals involved in these criminal acts. “There are people who break the law and think they will get away with it; we can’t accept that, and that is why we are here,” she stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to uphold law and order.
Nzwili also addressed other criminal activities in the area, including rampant cattle theft in Tinderet and Aldai Sub-Counties. She revealed a report about a syndicate that steals cattle from a
s far as Muhoroni and Kisumu, then conceals them in Bonjoke Forest. In response, she warned that the police, with assistance from the Kenya Forest Service, will intensify operations to dismantle the cattle theft ring which has been exacerbating poverty along the Kisumu-Nandi border.
In addition to these issues, the Commissioner called on local leaders and community influencers to promote the use of legal channels for resolving disputes and grievances, rather than resorting to illegal activities. She highlighted the importance of utilizing existing courts for any land or property-related conflicts.
The celebration also touched on the collaborative efforts between the National and County Government in combating the consumption of illicit brews in Nandi. Deputy Governor Dr. Yulita Mitei commended the synergy between the two government levels, especially their joint work with the County Alcohol and Liquor Control Committee, which has played a significant role in reducing the consumption of illicit brews in the
region.
Dr. Mitei also expressed gratitude to the residents of Tinderet for their willingness to curb the consumption of illegal alcohol, contributing to the overall health and safety of the community. The event saw the participation of the Nandi County Security team, National Government Heads of Departments, County officials, and several senior government officials, all united in their resolve to tackle these pressing local issues.
