Machakos county: Commissioner Josephine Ouko has urged the residents of Machakos to collaborate with law enforcement to address the rising issue of transformer theft. During the 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Masii grounds in Mwala sub-county, Ouko emphasized the necessity of community and security forces working in tandem to enhance local security and prevent theft.
According to Kenya News Agency, Commissioner Ouko highlighted the disturbing trend of increased transformer thefts in the area. She stressed that security can only be maintained through the collective efforts of the community and security personnel. “Security is upheld when the residents work with security officers, calling for the need to unite and protect the transformers in Machakos,” Ouko stated.
In her speech, Ouko also addressed environmental and economic issues, urging the community to engage in planting trees to meet the government’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032, with a local target for Machakos set at 300
million trees. She noted that such environmental efforts are crucial for sustainability and climate mitigation.
Furthermore, the commissioner discussed local economic development initiatives, including the construction of 10 new markets across the nine sub-counties of Machakos. These markets are intended to empower local entrepreneurs and business people by broadening their customer base, increasing sales opportunities, and boosting the county’s revenue.
On the topic of housing, Ouko revealed the completion of 222 affordable housing units and encouraged potential buyers to register. She pointed out that this project has significantly spurred socio-economic growth within the region.
The Mashujaa Day celebration, marking a national day of pride, was attended by national government officials, county officials, and local politicians, emphasizing a unified approach to address the various challenges facing Machakos County.
