Bama: The Minister of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Commander Ismaël SOMBIÉ, along with the Special Advisor to the President of Faso, Dr Abdourasmane KONATE, inaugurated the rice harvest of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Fatherland (VDP) in the commune of Bama, Hauts-Bassins region. This initiative took place on Friday, November 8, 2024, marking a significant step in the agricultural campaign for 2024-2025.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the area, which spans over 600 hectares, had been neglected for more than seven years before its redevelopment was ordered by Minister SOMBIE. The diligent oversight by the Department of Agriculture ensured the land was ready for cultivation this wet season, benefiting thousands of local farmers. The VDP not only secure the site but also contribute to agricultural production, aligning with the vision of the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim TRAORE. This season, they successfully planted 20 hectares of rice.
Commander SOMBIE commended the integra
tion of security measures with agricultural output, viewing it as a strategic path for Burkina Faso’s development. He expressed satisfaction with the dedication and patriotism shown by the farmers and VDP members. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to expand agricultural potential nationwide, aiming for food sovereignty by 2025. Instructions for swift harvesting were given to pave the way for dry season activities, including input distribution.
Rice remains a priority crop under the initiative, with a production target set at one million tonnes.
