OPUWO: This weekend, Coblenz and Okondjatu are gearing up for their annual festive football and netball tournaments, marking a resurgence of sports in the Otjituuo area after a five-year hiatus. Nguvitjita Katjina, the organizer of the Coblenz tournament, shared with Nampa on Thursday the community’s excitement to reignite football and netball activities. The event in Coblenz, held at the local school sports grounds, also aims to select the settlement’s All-Stars football and netball teams for upcoming Namibia Rural Sports Development Federation tournaments.
According to Katjina, the competition in Coblenz will be exclusive to Otjituuo teams, with 20 teams expected across both divisions. The netball and football teams will compete for a total prize fund of N.dollars 25,000, with registration fees set at N.dollars 1,900 per team. Winners in netball and football will receive cash prizes, medals, and a trophy, while runners-up and semi-finalists will also be awarded cash and medals. Meanwhile, in Okondjatu, the Kondjatu Combined School sports site will host the 35th annual festive football and netball tournament under the Etundu Rakajova Sports Association. Organizer Anaki Hamunjela anticipates more than 20 teams to compete. A total of N.dollars 20,000 in prizes is allocated, with different amounts earmarked for football and netball winners, runners-up, and semi-finalists. Last year, Okatjaveva and Chief Keja clinched the netball and football titles, respectively.
