Coalition Conflicts Leave Gobabis Municipality Chairperson Position Unfilled

GOBABIS: The Gobabis Municipality’s management committee remains without a chairperson due to ongoing conflicts within the coalition formed by opposition parties. After two failed attempts to elect a new chairperson, the position continues to be vacant, reflecting internal disagreements.

According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), The coalition consists of the Gobabis Residents’ Association, the Landless People’s Movement, the National Unity Democratic Organisation, and the Popular Democratic Movement, represented respectively by Isaak de Beer, Sylvester Binga, Elvira Theron, and Melba Tjozongoro. Tjozongoro was re-elected as mayor, and the other three retained their committee memberships. However, when De Beer was nominated for the chairperson position by Theron, Binga did not second the nomination, leading to uncertainty about the coalition’s stability. De Beer, speaking to Nampa, expressed his disillusionment and confusion regarding Binga’s reluctance to step down, questioning the reasons behind his actions. Despite efforts to resolve the situation, no progress has been made. Tjozongoro declined to comment on the issue, stating that a letter had been sent to the minister and they were awaiting a response. Binga deferred comments to Chief Executive Officer Sophia Eises, who confirmed the lac
k of a nomination for the chairperson and the decision to revisit the election process next year, as councillors are currently on recess.
