Vihiga: The Vihiga County Civil Registrar, Beatrice Mulanda, has emphasized the importance of timely registration of births and deaths for effective government planning, access to services, and safeguarding individual rights. Mulanda highlighted the critical role that civil registration plays in ensuring that government resources are allocated efficiently and that citizens receive the services they are entitled to.
According to Kenya News Agency, Mulanda noted that between July and December 2025, a total of 4,406 birth certificates and 802 death certificates were processed and issued in Vihiga and Sabatia sub-counties. She also shared that during the 2024/2025 financial year, the office issued 8,694 birth certificates and 1,563 death certificates, reflecting a growing awareness among residents about the importance of civic documentation.
Despite the progress, Mulanda identified several challenges that hinder the smooth operation of the civil registration office. She pointed out that inadequate staffing is a significant issue, as compiling key data and processing certificates require sufficient manpower. This shortage of personnel becomes more pronounced when the demand for services is high.
Additionally, the registrar highlighted inadequate funding as a major problem, particularly when there is a need to hire extra manpower for tasks like certificate printing. Unstable or non-existent internet connectivity also causes delays in their work processes.
Mulanda raised concerns about virus threats to their office gadgets, which necessitate the installation of antivirus software to protect stored records. She also mentioned the lack of sufficient ICT equipment and poor outreach in sensitizing the public on civil registration services as factors affecting their performance.
Mulanda advised parents and guardians to ensure they provide accurate names and details for their children during registration to avoid complications later on.
