City of Windhoek Council Unable to Complete Management Committee Nominations

WINDHOEK: The City of Windhoek’s management committee remains incomplete as the council failed to nominate members for two vacant positions. During the council meeting, presided over by District Magistrate Celma Amadhila, there were no nominations raised for the remaining positions on the management committee.

According to The Namibia Press Agency, In December 2023, SWAPO party member Queen Kamati and NUDO member Joseph Uapingene were elected mayor and deputy mayor, respectively. The council previously failed to elect the last two office bearers due to councilors walking out and abstaining from voting. Chief Executive Officer Moses Matyayi stressed the legal necessity and critical importance of a complete management committee for the city’s operational continuity. Absent councilors from the Affirmative Repositioning Movement and the Landless People’s Movement contributed to the inability to finalize nominations. Councilor Fransina Kahungu expressed concerns about the timing of the election, as some councilors had indicated their unavailability for the session. The election has been rescheduled to February 8, 2024, by Amadhila.
