BAKU: Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang stressed the importance of the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities as a foundational element in strengthening global climate governance. His remarks were made during his address at the World Leaders Climate Action Summit, held as part of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Ding, serving as Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Special Representative and a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, conveyed President Xi’s commendations to Azerbaijan for its efforts and contributions as the COP29 presidency. Xi extended his best wishes for the success of the summit, recognizing Azerbaijan’s role in promoting global climate governance.
Ding highlighted the significance of this year marking the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Framework Convention on C
limate Change’s entry into force. He urged collaborative efforts among parties to achieve favorable outcomes at COP29, meeting the international community’s high expectations at this new starting point.
He advocated for developed countries to demonstrate greater ambition by leading in emission reductions and setting earlier carbon neutrality targets. Simultaneously, he encouraged developing countries to strive within their capacities to contribute to global climate efforts.
Addressing the broader challenge of climate change, Ding underscored the need for a transformative shift in development models. He called for international cooperation to accelerate a fair and equitable energy transition, maintain stability in new energy supply chains, and enhance innovation and accessibility in green technologies and products.
Ding emphasized the critical role of funding and technology in bolstering climate resilience, urging developed nations to increase financial aid and technology transfers to developing countries.
He expressed optimism that the conference would establish a more ambitious funding goal to support the next phase of global climate initiatives.
Finally, Ding reiterated China’s commitment to collaborating with all nations, guided by the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, to jointly safeguard the planet and create a sustainable and beautiful world.
