Chinese Envoy Warns Against Misuse of Sanctions on Sudan

United nations: A Chinese envoy on Friday warned against abusing sanctions against Sudan after the Security Council adopted a resolution to renew the sanction regime for a year.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized that sanctions should serve as a means rather than an end and cautioned against their misuse as a political tool for interference and pressure.

Sun highlighted the urgency of achieving a ceasefire to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and advance the political process in Sudan. He urged the international community to protect Sudan's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity and to support mediation efforts by the United Nations and the African Union to restore peace and stability.

China's support for the draft resolution was noted by Sun, who pointed out that the conflict in Sudan has resulted in increasing civilian casualties and a worsening humanitarian situation. He affirmed that the renewal of sanctions concerning Sudan's Darfur region aims to control the arms flow, prevent conflict escalation, and minimize civilian harm.

Sun concluded by expressing hope that United Nations member states would adhere to the resolution's provisions and implement the necessary measures effectively.
