According to Namibia Press Agency, researchers at the university's School of Synthetic Biology and Biomanufacturing have made a breakthrough in synthetic biology. Their findings on the precise synthesis and assembly of large-scale human DNA, along with successful interspecies transfer, were published in Nature Methods. Yuan Yingjin, the lead researcher and a professor at the university, emphasized that innovation is Tianjin University's defining hallmark.
Established as Peiyang University on October 2, 1895, after the first Sino-Japanese War, Tianjin University was the first in China to adopt the Western university system. Over the past 130 years, it has pioneered numerous innovations and nurtured over 400,000 students, continuing to lead in frontier engineering fields despite historical hardships.
Tianjin University is a key player in China's innovation landscape. Li Fenghui, who founded Yunyao Aerospace in 2019 while a doctoral student at the university, has launched 47 satellites producing over 50,000 atmospheric profiles daily. The university supports business start-ups through its science and technology park, housing 110 enterprises.
Globally recognized, the university has 15 disciplines in the top 1 percent worldwide, and partnerships with over 260 international institutions. Wendy Larner, president of Cardiff University, acknowledged Tianjin University's leadership in innovation and its role as a global benchmark.
Chai Liyuan, president of Tianjin University, stated the institution continues to be a pathfinder in China's education system and aims to become a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.
