Beijing—Chinese legislators are currently reviewing a proposed amendment to the Law on National Defense Education, with discussions taking place during the ongoing session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the draft legislation, which was first presented in April 2024, is undergoing its second reading. The revision aims to enhance the provisions related to military training for students and introduce new measures to ensure that national defense education on campuses effectively informs students of their legal duties regarding military service. This initiative is part of a broader effort to create a comprehensive national defense education system that integrates various educational levels and improves the objectives, content, and methods of teaching national defense across primary, middle, and university levels.
The Law on National Defense Education, initially passed in 2001 and later amended in 2018, is being updated to better align with current national defense needs and educational strategies, reflecting China’s ongoing commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities through educational reforms.
