China Records Over 2.3 Billion Trips During Spring Festival Holiday

Beijing: During the eight-day Spring Festival holiday that concluded on Tuesday, official data revealed that more than 2.3 billion passenger trips were made across all regions in China. This massive movement of people highlights the significance of the Spring Festival, often regarded as the largest annual human migration.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the breakdown of these trips included 96.26 million railway journeys, 2.18 billion road trips, 9.41 million waterway voyages, and 18.24 million air travels. These figures were compiled from data provided by the Ministry of Transport, the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., among others.

The annual Spring Festival travel period, known in China as chunyun, is anticipated to set new records this year. From January 14 to February 22, an estimated 9 billion inter-regional passenger trips are expected to take place. This year, the Spring Festival, a time traditionally reserved for family reunions, occurred on January 29.

In recent years, a significant trend during chunyun has been the rise in the use of new energy vehicles (NEVs). This shift is largely attributed to the rapid expansion of charging infrastructure and the increasing environmental consciousness of the Chinese population. The State Grid Corporation of China has anticipated that the charging volume for NEVs on highways will reach unprecedented levels during the Spring Festival holiday.
