Beijing: China and the European Union (EU) are currently engaged in intensive consultations on the specific details of the price commitment plan on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), according to the Ministry of Commerce (MOC). MOC spokesperson He Yongqian made the remarks at a press conference on Thursday in response to a question regarding the EU’s imposition of tariffs on electric vehicles from China.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the discussions between China and the EU come amid the EU’s decision to impose tariffs on Chinese EVs, a move that has prompted concerns within the Chinese automotive industry. The MOC highlighted that the consultations aim to reach a mutually beneficial agreement that aligns with international trade norms and addresses the concerns of both parties.
The EU’s imposition of tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles is seen as part of broader measures to protect its domestic automotive sector from perceived unfair competition. The Chinese government, however, views these tariffs as
a potential barrier to trade and has expressed its readiness to engage in dialogue to resolve the issue.
The outcome of these consultations is anticipated to have significant implications for the global automotive market, particularly in the rapidly growing EV sector. Both China and the EU are major players in this market, and their ability to reach a consensus could set a precedent for future international trade negotiations in the automotive industry.
