Chile Welcomes 68 Palestinians Evacuated from Gaza Amid Crisis

Santiago: A group of 68 Palestinians, including 36 children and adolescents, arrived in Chile this Saturday after being evacuated from the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis arising from Israel’s offensive in the region.

According to Nam News Network, Chilean President Gabriel Boric, known for his advocacy of the Palestinian cause, celebrated the group’s safe arrival. On social media, he elaborated on the complexity of the operation, which took months to complete, aiming to save people whose lives were in jeopardy due to the ongoing conflict. President Boric emphasized the nation’s commitment to humanitarian values, echoing the sentiments of Chile’s national anthem.

The Chilean Foreign Ministry issued a statement highlighting that the evacuees have close ties to Chile. The operation was executed with the cooperation of various international organizations, underscoring Chile’s dedication to upholding international humanitarian law.

In a broader international context, Chile, alongside Mexico and Colombia, submitted a request to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in January 2024 to probe potential war crimes in Gaza. Further, in September of the same year, Chile supported South Africa’s genocide accusation against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the United Nations’ highest judicial body.
