Baku: A child rescued from the streets and suffering from severe kidney failure is being treated at the University Hospital of Fada N'Gourma. A child with severe kidney failure, identified during the operation to remove people begging in the city of Ouagadougou, is currently being treated at the Regional University Hospital Center (CHUR) of Fada N'Gourma, where he is receiving dialysis sessions, the Ministry of Family and Solidarity announced.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this child is among the 1,396 children removed from the streets during the operation carried out from June 24 to July 3, 2026, by the Ministry of Family and Solidarity, in collaboration with the National Police and the Laabal Brigade. After their removal, the children were referred to specialized facilities within the Ministry to receive social support tailored to their specific situations. It was within this context that the young patient's health condition necessitated his transfer to the University Hospital of Fada N'Gourma, where he is currently undergoing dialysis.
The department in charge of Family also indicates that another child, found with significant infected wounds on the head, is receiving appropriate medical care as well as psychosocial support to promote his recovery. The ministry specifies that social workers and health workers provide ongoing support to hospitalized children, offering them medical, psychological, and human assistance.
For the ministry, these situations illustrate the conditions of great vulnerability in which many street children live, often facing illness, family breakdown, or abandonment. The department headed by Lieutenant-Colonel Passowend Plagie Kabor reaffirms that no child should grow up on the streets or be deprived of the care, protection, and affection to which they are entitled. It assures that it will continue its efforts in protection, care, and social reintegration in collaboration with the various stakeholders involved.
At the end of the removal operation, 1,911 people experiencing homelessness were identified and removed from the streets, including 1,396 children, representing 73.05% of those affected. Among these children, 1,046 are talibs (students of Koranic schools), representing 75% of the children removed. According to the ministry, these figures reflect the scale of the phenomenon of child begging and highlight the need for mobilization by the State, families, religious communities, and all citizens to strengthen their protection.
The ministry also reiterates that all people removed from the streets have been referred to the appropriate facilities to receive appropriate support, in accordance with its mission to protect vulnerable people.
