Chess Kenya Launches Chess Program in Kisii Correctional Facilities

KISII, Kenya - In a pioneering move, the Chess Kenya Federation has introduced a chess program at the Kisii Main GK Prison, aimed at enhancing the lives of inmates through the strategic game.

According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative, known as 'Chess for Freedom', is recognized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and seeks to offer prisoners not only a pastime but also a potential pathway to personal development and rehabilitation.

The program involves partnership with Kisii Men and Women's Prisons, where inmates will receive training and participate in organized chess tournaments. This initiative was highlighted during the International Women's Day celebrations at the Kisii Women's Prison, where the Federation's Gender and Special Needs Secretary, Rhoda Olisa, emphasized the transformative power of chess. Olisa explained that the 'Training of Trainers' component will enable inmates to train others in chess upon their release, potentially paving the way for employment opportunities in schools and other educational settings.

Chess for Schools Committee Chairperson, Saphinah Kenyando, articulated the selection of chess as a disciplinary and educational tool within the correctional facility. She underscored chess's ability to foster patience, critical thinking, and strategic decision-making among players. Kenyando also pointed out the therapeutic and mental well-being benefits of the game, noting that inmates engaged in chess have reflected on their past decisions and recognized the value of making better choices.

Kenyando revealed that the training program has been ongoing and that the enrolled inmates will participate in the 4th Championship of World Chess in Prison tournament next year. Notably, Kisii GK Prison has the distinction of being the first to implement the Chess for Freedom Program in Kenya and the third in the African region.

The initiative's launch included a chess tournament at the Women's Prison, co-organized with the Office of the Kisii Woman Representative, Dorice Aburi, to commemorate International Women's Day. The event celebrated the participants and winners, highlighting the role of such achievements in boosting inmates' self-esteem, fostering recognition, and facilitating smoother reintegration into society upon their release.

The Chess Kenya Federation, along with partners including Cooperative Bank, Equity Bank, Scholar Media Africa, and others, donated 15 chess boards to the facility, marking a significant step towards enriching the lives of those within the Kisii correctional system through the game of chess.
