Gulmu: The Circle for Islamic Studies, Research and Training (CERFI) organized its 2026 regional conference in Fada N'Gourma this Sunday, focusing on the theme "Islam and Traditions". The event witnessed the participation of administrative, customary, and religious authorities, alongside various community representatives.

According to Burkina Information Agency, CERFI's regional head, Ousseini Sawadogo, highlighted the conference's aim to foster dialogue on the interaction between Islamic values and Burkinab¨ socio-cultural practices. He underscored the need for a reflective framework that enhances understanding of Islam and traditions, identifying both convergences and divergences, while emphasizing shared values such as solidarity, fraternity, and justice.

Sawadogo urged the youth to embrace these teachings to forge a balanced identity, advocating for peacemaking and unity-building. Patrice Seri, representing the Goulmou region's governor, praised CERFI's initiative, noting the theme's relevance to national security and social challenges. He emphasized valuing convergences between Islam and traditions to promote peaceful coexistence and national unity.

El Hadji Boureima Manli, the ceremony's patron, pointed out the significance of understanding the interplay between religious practices and traditions in daily life. He stated that the conference provides an avenue to comprehend Islam's foundations, appreciate compatible traditions, and adapt those needing change.

Keynote speaker, social affairs administrator Ali Beyd Komi, highlighted the complementarity between Islam and Burkinab¨ culture, asserting that Islam enhances traditional values rather than opposing them. He emphasized that convergence is predominant over differences, advocating for a harmonious society by reconciling faith with cultural values.

The conference, part of a national effort to encourage interreligious and intercultural dialogue, aims to solidify peace and social cohesion amid security challenges. The event was officially inaugurated with hopes that discussions would yield actionable recommendations to foster social cohesion and community development.
