Centre-south: “Satisfactory” 2023 mid-term review of achievements in the areas of water supply and sanitation

The Secretary General of the Center-South region, Abibata Bamouni, on Thursday deemed “satisfactory” the 2023 mid-term review of achievements in the areas of drinking water supply and sanitation at the regional level, during the session of the Regional Thematic Group – Water and Sanitation (GTR-EA) of the Center-South.

In accordance with the decree on the creation, attributions, compositions, organization and functioning of the Water and Sanitation Thematic Groups (GT-EA), the members of the Center-South regional section of the GT-EA held their 2023 mid-term session on Thursday.

After reviewing the activities carried out in the context of water supply and sanitation in the region during the first six months of the year 2023, the secretary general of the region, Abibata Bamouni gave her assessment of the situation.

According to her, the performance achieved is “ satisfactory ”.

In the presentation of the activities carried out in the field of drinking water supply, the head of the Drinking Water Supply Department at the Regional Directorate for Water and Sanitation of the Center-South (DREA-CSD), Harouna Zongo, told the participants that the first half of 2023 was marked by several achievements for the benefit of the populations of the Center-South.

He cited, among other things, the construction of 32 modern water points (PEM) and the rehabilitation of 34 other PEMs, the construction of six (6) high-flow boreholes and the renewal and training of 28 Water Users Associations (AUE).

Despite the budgetary restriction and the insecurity which constituted the main difficulties encountered during the semester, Mr. Zongo specified that the actors were able to commit 411.8 million CFA francs, including 69.3 million FCFA outside programming, giving a financial commitment rate of 49.5% for an initial amount of 692 million CFA francs.

In the field of wastewater and excreta sanitation, the implementation of scheduled activities shows a rate of 64%, indicated the head of service of the National Wastewater and Excreta Sanitation Program at DREA-CSD, Lalaïcha Ouédraogo.

Ms. Ouédraogo listed, under the achievements during the period, the construction of 941 family latrines for households and 17 blocks of institutional latrines as well as awareness sessions on good hygiene and sanitation practices for the benefit of 6,179 people including 2,604 women.

The Secretary General of the Center-South region, at the end of the work, encouraged all the stakeholders in the process of operationalizing the National Water Strategy at the regional level, inviting them to maintain the course set and work to ensure that the slogan “Drinking water for all” is a reality by 2030.
