Center-South Region Kicks Off National Reforestation Campaign with 3,200 New Plantings


KONIOUDOU – In a significant environmental initiative, the Center-South region commenced the 2024 national reforestation campaign by planting 3,200 trees in Konioudou, Kombissiri commune, Bazèga province on National Arbor Day, June 22, 2024. This event marked the sixth annual celebration of National Tree Day and aimed at fostering community engagement in forest restoration and land rehabilitation.



According to Burkina Information Agency, the day-long event was themed ‘Tree, a capital of resilience for endogenous development,’ underscoring the critical role of trees in sustainable development and ecological resilience. The regional governor, Massadalo Yvette Nacoulma/Sanou, led the planting activities, which covered an area of one and a half hectares. The species planted included local varieties like Néré, Baobab, Tamarind, and Acacia, as well as exotic types such as Moringa and Mango.



Governor Nacoulma/Sanou highlighted the day as a vital reminder of the importance of trees and the necessity of preserving them. In addition to the mass planting, the event also provided 100 plants to local residents to encourage tree planting in their own spaces.



Naba Boulga 2, the chief of Konioudou, expressed gratitude for the selection of his village for this year’s launch and committed with his community to the care of the newly planted trees. The reforestation efforts are set to continue through September 30, 2024, aiming to significantly enhance the region’s green cover.
