Luanda: The Episcopal Conference of Angola and So Tomé (CEAST) has established several working committees in anticipation of Pope Leo XIV's upcoming visit to Angola, which has yet to be scheduled. According to Angola Press News Agency, the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See recently announced during a press conference that Pope Leo XIV is expected to visit Angola this year as part of his tour across several African nations. The decree issued by CEAST outlines the formation of these "ad hoc" working commissions to facilitate the preparations for the pontiff's visit. The document states that the general coordination of the committees will be under the leadership of Dom Belmiro Tchissengueti, with Dom António Bengui and canons Apolónio Graciano and Antero dos Reis also serving as key members. The committee responsible for "funds raising" will be led by Dom Filomeno Vieira Dias. Additionally, the Logistics, Communication, Liturgy, Protocol, Transport, and Health commissions, alongside the Secretariat/Archive , will be headed by Dom Maurício Camuto, Dom António Jaca, Dom Emílio Sumbelelo, Edna de Almeida, Father Américo Gomes, Miguel Gaspar, and Father Afonso Tchimuku, respectively. In parallel with CEAST's efforts, Angolan President Joo Lourenço has mandated the formation of a Commission tasked with organizing the papal visit, coordinated by the Minister of State for the Social Area, Maria do Rosário Bragança. This visit will mark the third papal visit to Angola, following those of John Paul II in 1992 and Benedict XVI in 2009. Pope Leo XIV, formerly Robert Francis Prevost, became the first pope from the United States in May 2025. Known for his reformist approach, he aligns closely with the principles of his predecessor, Pope Francis.
