Catholic Church Deacon Charged with Murder and Assault in Rundu Court

Rundu: A Catholic Church deacon from Nkurenkuru, 69-year-old Markus Max Musongo, faced his initial court appearance on Tuesday at the Rundu Magistrate's Court, charged with murder and multiple counts of assault. Musongo is accused of fatally shooting his 31-year-old son, Felix Musongo, in an incident that also involved assaulting his wife and discharging a firearm. According to Namibia News Digest, Musongo was arrested on Monday in the Kavango West Region at Siudiva Village. He is charged with murder read with the provisions of combating domestic violence, two counts of assault - one involving physical injury to his wife and another by threat - and discharging a firearm in a public area. The charges stem from an episode where he allegedly shot his son behind the head, neck, and leg, leading to his death. Additional allegations include slapping his wife, causing an injury, and subsequently threatening to shoot her. During the court session, presided over by Magistrate Sonia Samupofu, Musongo appeared calm ye t somber. Public Prosecutor Michael Munika, representing the State, argued the severity of the charges warranted that Musongo be held in custody. Consequently, the accused remains detained, with the case postponed to January 24, 2025, for further proceedings.
