Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias to participate in the Informal Meeting “Gymnich” of the EU Foreign Ministers (Lisbon, 26-27.05.2021)

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias is traveling to Lisbon this evening, Wednesday, May 26, to participate in the Informal Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Member States of the European Union (“Gymnich”), in the framework of which three meetings and a working lunch will be held tomorrow, Thursday May 27.

In particular, the three meetings will focus on EU-Africa relations, the unresolved conflicts in the Eastern Neighbourhood and the EU’s strategic outlook for the Indo-Pacific respectively.

The Foreign Ministers of the EU Member States will also attend a lunch with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to discuss the situation in the Middle East.

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis has a videoconference with Slovenian State Secretary of Foreign Affairs Gašper Dovžan (26.05.2021)

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis reiterated today Greece’s support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans in a teleconference with Slovenian State Secretary of Foreign Affairs Gašper Dovžan, in view of the upcoming Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2021.

During the discussion, which was held in a very friendly atmosphere, Mr. Dovžan presented the priorities and the preparation of the upcoming Slovenian Presidency, due to begin on July 1, 2021. In particular, Mr. Varvitsiotis expressed our country’s support for the work of the forthcoming Slovenian Presidency, stressing that it is a positive fact that Slovenia is taking over the Presidency of the Council of the EU since it is a country that knows the wider region’s particularities. In addition, he stressed the need to speed up the adoption of national Recovery and Resilience Plans and to ensure that there are no delays in the release of recovery funds. On the migration issue, the Alternate Minister underlined the challenges the frontline states are facing and emphasized its external dimension, which is inextricably linked with the internal one, underscoring the need to use all the EU tools available to increase migrant returns.

President Ramaphosa to officiate the swearing-in of the new Chief of the SANDF

President Cyril Ramaphosa will as Commander-in-Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) officiate at the Swearing-in Ceremony of the new Chief of the SANDF to be held on Friday, 28 May 2021.

The event will take place at the Pretoria Military Sports Club in Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria.

The outgoing Chief of the SANDF, General Solly Shoke, will hand over command of the SANDF to Lieutenant-General Rudzani Maphwanya who was appointed by President Ramaphosa recently.

General Shoke retires on 31 May 2021 and Lt-Gen Maphwanya will, with effect from 01 June 2021, become Chief of the South African National Defence Force.

President Ramaphosa will witness the farewell of the retiring General Shoke during a Change of Command parade.
