MEDIA ADVISORY: SPEAKERS’ FORUM TO HOLD A THREE-DAY GENDER SUMMIT FROM TOMORROW IN KZN

Starting tomorrow, the Speakers’ Forum will host a three-day Gender Summit in Ballito, Kwa Zulu-Natal. The summit aims to assess the progress made by the South African Legislative Sector (SALS) in Gender Mainstreaming and actions against Gender-based violence during the 6th Parliament.

The Speakers Forum established an independent High-Level Panel in the 5th Parliament to assess the implementation of legislation towards fundamental change in the lives of ordinary South Africans, with a focus on gender inequality. Despite various campaigns and interventions carried out by Parliament and Provincial Legislatures through the Speakers Forum, South Africa has experienced alarming levels of gender-based violence since the start of the 6th Parliament.

Therefore, it is imperative to analyse and review gender transformation and development to inform the SALS strategy for gender mainstreaming in Parliament and Provincial Legislatures. Effective coordination and alignment of gender programmes in the Sector should also be ensured by identifying roles and responsibilities.

The summit seeks to establish a long-term vision and clear role of SALS in the gender transformation landscape. The report and recommendations from the summit will significantly contribute to the 30-Year Report on Gender Transformation and Mainstreaming in the SA Legislative Sector.

This critical summit will be attended by members of the Speakers Forum (National Council of Provinces Chairperson, Speaker of the National Assembly and legislatures and their deputies), Chairpersons of committees, Secretaries of Legislatures, relevant government ministers, the Judiciary, SALGA, Civil Society groups, institutes, Universities of higher learning, and the South African Development Countries Parliaments and the European Union.

The summit will take place from Tuesday, August 1st to Thursday August 3rd, from 09:00 am to 16:30. It will be hosted at The Capital Zimbali Hotel in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
