Cardoso Hails Regional Women’s Basketball League as Vital for Growth

Windhoek: Sporting Club de Luanda women's basketball head coach, Angela Cardoso, emphasized the importance of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women's Basketball League Africa (WBLA) in the southern African region, stating that it will help grow the sport and enhance competition across the continent. Cardoso's team recently triumphed in the FIBA Women's Basketball League Africa Zone 6, Group E qualifiers, which took place in Windhoek from November 7 to 9, 2025.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the victory has secured the Angolan club a place in the main Women's Basketball League Africa tournament, which is scheduled to be held in Cairo, Egypt, in December 2025. Speaking to Nampa after their victory over Brave Hearts of Malawi, Cardoso highlighted the significance of such competitions, particularly for developing basketball nations like Namibia and Malawi.

Cardoso remarked, "These types of tournaments are very important, especially for countries that are just starting out in basketball. It allows them to experience a different level of play by competing against well-established teams." Her vision is to see the teams in this region grow stronger, making this part of Africa more competitive in the sport.

Brave Hearts team manager Daudi Hussein supported Cardoso's views, noting that participation in the regional tournament is crucial for the growth of women's basketball, although more effort is needed to boost involvement. Hussein pointed out that only three teams participated, indicating that more work is needed to draw additional teams to the tournament.

Hussein further mentioned that regardless of the outcomes, each championship offers valuable lessons that inspire teams to return home with a determination to improve. The FIBA Women's Basketball League Africa Zone 6, Group E qualifiers featured three teams: UNAM Phoenix (Namibia), Brave Hearts BCC (Malawi), and Sporting Club de Luanda (Angola), competing at the Deutsche H¶here Privatschule (DHPS) Indoor Court in Windhoek.
