Ouagadougou: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday that he will step down as president of the Liberal Party of Canada (LPC), but that he will only step down after a new leader is elected, several media outlets report. ‘I intend to resign as president of the [Liberal] party and as prime minister when the party has chosen its next leader,’ Trudeau said in a special address to the nation.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the prime minister also stated that he had asked Canadian Governor General Mary Simon to suspend the national parliament until March 24. This measure is intended to avoid the confidence vote that opposition parties had planned for the end of January.
