Phnom penh: Cambodia deported 64 South Korean online scam suspects, including five women, to their birth country on Friday night, said a news release from Cambodia's Ad-Hoc Committee to Combat Online Scams on Saturday. The suspects were expelled from the kingdom through the Techo International Airport in southern Kandal province, and the group will face legal action in South Korea.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the deportations occurred after authorities discovered the individuals' involvement in online fraud. This is not the first instance of such deportations; the committee noted that Cambodia has previously sent back 180 South Korean nationals for similar reasons.
Cambodia has intensified efforts to crack down on cyber scam networks, with the aim of maintaining and protecting security, public order, and social safety. In nearly four months, the kingdom has arrested a total of 3,455 online scam suspects from 20 different nationalities.
