Call for Tighter Regulation on Gambling as Concerns Over Youth Impact Rise

KERUGOYA — Amidst growing concerns about the negative effects of unregulated gambling, Susan Wambura, a recent winner in a Coca-Cola betting promotion, has voiced a strong plea for the government to step up its regulation of the betting industry.

According to Kenya News Agency, who spoke to the press in Kerugoya, the proliferation of unregistered betting sites has contributed to a rise in mental health issues among the youth, increased domestic violence, and other social vices. She highlighted the desperate situations faced by many young people who are lured by the prospect of quick wealth through gambling. "The government, as a stakeholder in all companies, must protect its citizens by ensuring justice for those defrauded and minimizing gambling-related fraud," Wambura stated.

She acknowledged that while some betting companies have played a positive role in the community by creating jobs, assisting the less fortunate, and supporting educational and medical needs, the overall impact of uncontrolled gambling has been largely detrimental.

Erick Mutuku, a store manager at Coca-Cola in Mwea sub-county, reported a sales increase and job creation due to the betting promotion. He noted that the heightened activity had spurred local economic development by increasing the demand for manpower.

The growing call for regulation aims to curb the unchecked expansion of betting companies and mitigate the associated social issues, advocating for a balanced approach that preserves the benefits while protecting vulnerable populations.
