ADDIS ABABA: The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Tlhopane Motsepe, conveyed his enthusiasm for Ethiopia’s proposal to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2029. Speaking at a media briefing, Motsepe praised Ethiopia for its hospitality and historical significance within African football.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Motsepe expressed his gratitude towards the Ethiopian government and its citizens, highlighting the warm reception he receives upon each visit. He referred to Ethiopia as a home for all Africans, acknowledging its deep-rooted football legacy. The CAF President also noted the honor of conducting the 46th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in what he described as one of the most beautiful locations globally.
Motsepe emphasized his excitement about Ethiopia’s intention to bid for AFCON 2029 and extended his best wishes for their proposal. He urged collaboration between the Ethiopian government and the Football Federation to ensure timely and effective decisions con
cerning the bid.
Furthermore, Motsepe acknowledged the varying levels of success across African nations in football development, expressing optimism about Ethiopia’s potential under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. He credited the Prime Minister’s commitment and passion for football as significant advantages for Ethiopia’s aspirations.
CAF President Taye Atske Silassie also took the opportunity to request formal endorsement from CAF for Ethiopia’s bid during the assembly’s opening session earlier in the day. Motsepe reiterated CAF’s commitment to elevating African football to global prominence.
