Seoul: The Cabinet has given the green light to bills appointing special counsels to investigate former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed martial law attempt and corruption allegations against his wife, Kim Keon Hee. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting led by President Lee Jae-myung, which also sanctioned a probe into the drowning death of a Marine during a 2023 flood rescue operation.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the three bills are expected to receive President Lee’s endorsement and be officially promulgated soon. This will pave the way for the recommendation and appointment of special prosecutors to commence the investigations. The bill concerning Yoon calls for a permanent special counsel to delve into 11 charges, including insurrection and military mutiny, related to his unsuccessful martial law bid in December.
In addition, another bill targets Kim Keon Hee, the former first lady, focusing on allegations of stock price manipulation and her acceptance of a luxury bag, as well as her alleged interference with the election nomination process.
