Businessman sentenced for tax related crime

Monnapule Ernest Sebeela (46) of Lekone Trading was convicted and sentenced to a fine for contravention of the Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011. He appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ court on 5 October 2023.

The matter relates to a South African Revenue Service (SARS) investigation into alleged tax evasion between 2020 and 2021 when the accused failed to register his company, Lekone Trading, for Value Added Tax (VAT). His actions led to SARS losing over R280 000. The investigation was handed over to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in Bloemfontein which led to Sebeela appearing in court and subsequently sentenced.
