Busia, Kenya – In a bid to increase forest and tree cover, Busia Governor Paul Otuoma has announced plans to establish more tree nurseries across the county. This announcement was made during a national tree planting event at Korinda GK Prison. Governor Otuoma highlighted Busia’s low ranking in forest and tree cover, with forest cover at only 1% and tree cover at 8%, and stressed the need for concerted efforts to reverse this trend.
According to Kenya News Agency, The Governor outlined an ambitious program to establish water towers in Samia Hills, Bunyala Teso South Hills, and Teso North Hills through widespread tree planting. He emphasized the importance of community support and collaboration with both state and non-state actors in this endeavor. Otuoma also noted the necessity of allocating resources for tree nurseries in every subcounty to ensure a steady supply of seedlings.
Additionally, Otuoma spoke about plans to develop policies and legal frameworks addressing climate change challenges in Busia County. He directed all county departments to prioritize environmental sustainability in their plans and programs. The Governor called on residents to engage in environmental days and activities, underscoring the importance of tree planting in combating desertification and observing environmental safety measures.
County Commissioner Kipchumba Ruto reported that 150,000 trees had been planted at Korinda GK Prison and additional tree planting efforts were underway at the locational level across the county. Ruto also advised against planting blue gum trees in wetland areas due to their high water absorption, which can deplete rivers.
